Month by month
Serengeti in June
June opens the dry season and reopens the north. The herds are in the Western Corridor, the mobile camps move up to the Mara River ahead of them, and most lodges charge mid-season rather than peak rates for one more month.
If you only want the answer
June is prime and good value: the model gives 28.2°C days and just 9 mm of rain over 2 days. The herds are usually in the Western Corridor, where Grumeti River crossings are possible, and in early years their front reaches the north by late June. Northern camps reopen on 1 June, many on low or mid rates until the peak starts on 1 July.
Serengeti weather in June: the dry season starts
The model gives June 28.2°C by day, 17.0°C at night and 9 mm of rain over 2 days. Measured nights are cooler, in the low to mid teens, and colder still on the open south-eastern plains, so pack a warm layer for early drives in an open vehicle. The north still gets some rain in the dry months. Monthly rainfall from the model is approximate.
The roads are good again. The black-cotton tracks of the Western Corridor, impassable in April, are firm in June, which is part of why this is the month to explore the west.
The Western Corridor and the Grumeti crossings
In June the herds are usually in the Western Corridor, and crossings of the Grumeti River are possible from about this month. Serengeti Balloon Safaris starts its Western Corridor and northern flights in June, alongside its year-round flights from central Serengeti.
In early years the front of the herds reaches the north by late June. Asilia's camps put it this way: the northern camps reopen in June in anticipation of the herds, which usually begin to arrive towards the end of the month, with river crossings usually under way by mid-July.
The north reopens on mid-season rates
The mobile camps move north on 1 June. Lemala's Mara camp opens at its low rate of US$330 per person sharing in June 2026, Asilia's Sayari Camp at the Mara River is on its secret-season rate of US$1,030 until 30 June, and Asilia's Ubuntu and Olakira camps reopen in the Lamai and Bologonja areas at US$780 and US$1,100. All of them rise sharply on 1 July.
In the centre and west, June is mid season: Lemala Ewanjan charges US$427 per person and Elewana's Serengeti Migration Camp US$808. Not everyone waits for July, though. Asilia's Dunia and Namiri Plains move to high-season rates from 1 June, and Elewana's Pioneer Camp near the Moru Kopjes to US$1,020. TANAPA's concession fee for lodge guests is still at its low rate of US$59 per night, with VAT, until 30 June.
