Money, honestly

What a visit to the Serengeti actually costs

Two of you, three nights at a TANAPA public campsite in your own 4x4: about $1,227 in fees at 2026 rates, before fuel and food. Most of that is the Serengeti's $82.60 daily entry fee and the Ngorongoro permit you pay twice on the road from Arusha. This page shows where every dollar goes, then prices the same three nights at a mid-range camp and at a fly-in camp.

If you only want the answer

For two people driving their own foreign-registered 4x4 to a TANAPA public campsite, three nights in November 2026 come to about $1,227: $495.60 in Serengeti entry fees, $212.40 in camping, $141.60 in vehicle entry and $377.60 for crossing the Ngorongoro Conservation Area in and out. The same three nights cost about $3,199 at Lemala Ewanjan, a full-board camp in the Seronera Valley, and about $7,498 at Asilia's Dunia Camp with return flights from Arusha. All figures include 18% VAT; fuel, food and tips are extra.

Budget one: self-drive camping, the cheapest way to sleep in the park

About $1,227 for two people over three nights, in fees alone. TANAPA's tariff, unchanged in its 2026/27 data, charges a non-East African adult $70 plus 18% VAT, so $82.60, per 24 hours from 16 May to 14 March, plus $35.40 a night on a public campsite and $47.20 a day for a foreign-registered vehicle up to 2,000 kg. We count three fee-days for three nights and price everything for November 2026.

The line people forget is the road in. From Arusha you cross the Ngorongoro Conservation Area to reach Naabi Hill Gate, and the NCAA charges its own $70.80 permit per adult and $47.20 per foreign vehicle, valid for a single entry. You cross it twice, so you pay it twice. Hire a Tanzanian-registered 4x4 in Arusha instead and the Serengeti vehicle fee drops to TSh 20,000 a day, about $8.

Line itemPer day (2 people)3 nights (2 people)
Serengeti conservation fee, non-East African adult (2 × $82.60 incl. VAT, TANAPA 2026/27)$165.20$495.60
Vehicle entry, foreign-registered up to 2,000 kg ($47.20 incl. VAT, TANAPA 2026/27)$47.20$141.60
TANAPA public campsite, Seronera (2 × $35.40 incl. VAT, 2026/27)$70.80$212.40
Ngorongoro permit, in and out (2 people × 2 crossings × $70.80, NCAA, checked 6 Oct 2026)n/a$283.20
Ngorongoro vehicle permit, foreign-registered, in and out (2 × $47.20, NCAA, checked 6 Oct 2026)n/a$94.40
Total$283.20 in the park$1,227.20

Fuel and food are not in the total: we found no dated fuel price for Karatu, the last reliable fill-up, and Seronera's pump is unreliable. Arusha to Seronera is about 305 km each way, plus your game-drive loops.

Budget two: a mid-range camp in the Seronera Valley

About $3,199 for two people over three nights. Lemala Ewanjan Tented Camp sits in the Seronera Valley, 30 minutes from the airstrip, and publishes its rates: from $305 per person per night sharing, full board with house drinks, in its low season of 1 November to 19 December 2026 (lemalacamps.com, read 6 Oct 2026). Game drives, a guide and a vehicle are not included, so this budget assumes you drive the same 4x4 as in budget one.

Sleeping in any lodge or camp inside the park adds TANAPA's concession fee: $50 plus VAT, so $59, per adult per night from October to June, and $70.80 from July to September. Lemala's rate excludes it, as almost every Serengeti rate does. In July to September the same camp charges $595 and the concession fee rises, which roughly doubles the bed line.

Line itemPer day (2 people)3 nights (2 people)
Serengeti conservation fee (2 × $82.60 incl. VAT, TANAPA 2026/27)$165.20$495.60
TANAPA concession fee, October to June rate (2 × $59 incl. VAT)$118$354
Vehicle entry, foreign-registered up to 2,000 kg ($47.20 incl. VAT)$47.20$141.60
Lemala Ewanjan, full board, low season 1 Nov to 19 Dec 2026 (2 × $305, read 6 Oct 2026)$610$1,830
Ngorongoro permits in and out, 2 people and 1 vehicle (NCAA, checked 6 Oct 2026)n/a$377.60
Totaln/a$3,198.80

Coming with an operator instead of your own car? The only published vehicle-and-guide price we found is Ndutu Safari Lodge's, $280 to $350 a day on its 2024/25 rate sheet, which would add roughly $840 to $1,050 over three days.

Budget three: fly in to a top-end camp

About $7,498 for two people over three nights. Dunia Camp is Asilia's eight-tent camp in the central Serengeti, 45 minutes from Seronera airstrip, and its rate is close to all-inclusive: meals, house drinks, scheduled open-vehicle game drives and airstrip transfers. In its Secret Season, 1 October to 19 December 2026, it charges $920 per person per night; from June to September it is $1,200 (asiliaafrica.com, read 6 Oct 2026).

Park and concession fees are extra, as is Asilia's own conservation charge, which its page names without a figure. Coastal Aviation flies Arusha to Seronera for $259 plus $28 in taxes and back for $259 plus $18 on its timetable valid to May 2027, so the flights replace the Ngorongoro permits and the vehicle fee of the first two budgets.

Line itemPer day (2 people)3 nights (2 people)
Dunia Camp, all-inclusive, Secret Season 1 Oct to 19 Dec 2026 (2 × $920, read 6 Oct 2026)$1,840$5,520
Serengeti conservation fee (2 × $82.60 incl. VAT, TANAPA 2026/27)$165.20$495.60
TANAPA concession fee, October to June rate (2 × $59 incl. VAT)$118$354
Coastal Aviation, Arusha–Seronera return, 2 people ($287 out + $277 back incl. taxes, timetable to 31 May 2027)n/a$1,128
Totaln/a$7,497.60

Auric Air's rack fares on the same route are $182 out and $280 back including taxes (timetable to 31 Dec 2026), which would save about $204 for two. Asilia's conservation charge is not in the total because Asilia does not print the amount.

Why the road costs more than people expect

Arusha to Naabi Hill Gate is about 254 km, and roughly 100 km of it runs through the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. The NCAA states that its permit is 'valid for one entry within 24 hours only', so a three-night Serengeti trip by road buys it twice: $283.20 for two adults and $94.40 for a foreign car. Operator pages still call it a transit fee; the NCAA tariff has no such line.

The western road avoids it. Enter and leave through Ndabaka Gate from Mwanza, 149 km on the paved T4, and you pay no NCAA fees at all. That only makes sense if you start on Lake Victoria.

Paying at the gate

TANAPA collects its fees through the government's electronic payment gateway: Visa or Mastercard at the gate, Tanzanian mobile money, or online through ors.tanapa.go.tz. No TANAPA document mentions cash, and a Tanzanian self-drive hire company says cash is refused, so carry a card that works abroad and treat dollars as a backup for everything else.

On an organised safari the operator pays every TANAPA and NCAA fee for you and the client never sees the gate till. Gates open 06:00 to 18:00 according to secondary sources; TANAPA itself says only that they close at 6 pm.

Where the money surprises people

  • The entry fee has two seasons and the lodge concession fee has two different ones. Entry is cheaper only from 15 March to 15 May; the concession fee is cheaper from October to June.
  • Residents pay half the entry fee but the full concession fee.
  • Almost every lodge inside the park quotes its rate without park and concession fees. Wilderness Usawa is the one clear exception we found.
  • Ndutu, where many calving-season camps sit, is in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. Guests there pay NCAA fees, and a drive into the Serengeti adds TANAPA's on top.
  • A balloon flight costs $599 per person with Serengeti Balloon Safaris, park fees not included, rising to $660 from 1 January 2027.
  • The vehicle fee is per vehicle. Four people sharing a car split the $47.20; two people carry it alone.
