Month by month
Serengeti in April
April is the Serengeti's quietest month. The long rains are at their height, the seasonal camps are closed, and the park's tracks are at their worst, but the green-season rates are the lowest of the year and the resident cats of Seronera are still there.
If you only want the answer
April is the low season: the model gives 144 mm of rain over 18 days, the joint highest of the year, and 27.4°C days. Many seasonal camps close, roads are at their worst, and flying in is the sensible choice. In exchange, rates are the lowest of the year, Asilia's Dunia Camp from US$560 per person, and the park fee is US$70.80. Base yourself at Seronera.
Serengeti weather in April: the wettest month
The model gives April 144 mm of rain over 18 days, level with December as the wettest month of the year, with 27.4°C days and 17.4°C nights. Measured rainfall in the north is higher still. Monthly rainfall from the model is approximate, but nobody disputes that April is wet.
Roads are at their worst of the year. The black-cotton soils of the Western Corridor and the south become impassable in places, and some tracks close. Coastal Aviation flies daily from Arusha to Seronera for US$259 one way plus US$28 taxes, which beats a long day on the road from Arusha in the mud.
What is closed in April
April is the month the mobile and northern camps go dark. Asilia's Sayari, Olakira and Ubuntu camps are closed, Lemala's Mara and Ndutu camps are between seasons, the Nasikia mobile camp is closed, and Tanganyika Wilderness Camps' Serengeti Kati Kati, open the rest of the year, closes for April.
The permanent lodges of the centre and west stay open. Serengeti Serena, Seronera Wildlife Lodge, Four Seasons, Kirawira Serena and the TANAPA rest house at Seronera all work through the rains, as do Asilia's Dunia and Namiri Plains and Elewana's Migration and Pioneer camps.
The cheapest Serengeti of the year
Green-season rates run from 1 April to 31 May 2026: Asilia's Dunia Camp from US$560 per person against US$1,200 in high season, Namiri Plains from US$740 against US$2,250, Elewana's Serengeti Migration Camp US$584 on full board and Pioneer Camp US$678. TANAPA's conservation fee is at its low rate of US$70.80 per adult per 24 hours until 15 May.
The herds are on the move north-west through the centre, past Moru and west of Seronera, towards the Western Corridor, so a Seronera base still puts you near them in many years. The resident lions, leopards and cheetahs of the Seronera valley stay all year. Malaria risk is highest in and after the rains, so take antimalarials as advised for the whole park.
